Qualcomm Enters Always-Online Chromebook Segment With Acer Spin 513

The newly publicized release of the Acer Spin 513 is notable not only for its obvious implication about how the Taiwanese elecronics maker will continue to invest in the Chrome OS segment moving forward. Besides that, it also marks the debut of the world’s first always-online Chromebook, which is how Qualcomm is eager to refer to this device.

That promise is deeply rooted in the Acer Spin 513’s support for 4G LTE connectivity. This feature is, naturally, enabled by the notebook’s system-on-chip, the Snapdragon 7c platform from Qualcomm. In effect, this makes the Acer Spin 513 as wireless as any modern smartphone. And having a consistent connection to the Internet is beneficial to staying productive on the go, which is the root of Qualcomm and Acer’s marketing pitch for the Spin 513.

The same can be said about its battery life as the Chromebook in question can remain autonomous for up to 14 hours on a single charge, a figure that beats the vast majority of other ultrabooks on the market, whether they are running Chrome OS or any other operating system.

An enterprise-focused edition of the said notebook is also available for pre-orders in the U.S. as of today.

Disney Picks Up Jackson’s Much-Awaited Beatles Documentary

The Walt Disney Studios managed to secure full distribution rights to Peter Jackson’s long-anticipated Beatles documentary, the American company said in a press release published this morning. Titled “The Beatles: Get Back,” the film will attempt to briefly summarize the entire history of the legendary rock ‘n roll band, including the recording of their seminal studio album Let It Be, as well as their very final live concert ever; the infamous impromptu performance at the rooftops of the Apple Corps HQ in London which took place on the 30th of January, 1969.

As for how succinct of an overview we can expect, Disney disclosed that the final cut of the documentary runs approximately 80 minutes. More than half of the film’s duration – 44 minutes – are dedicated to the said rooftop concert that was conceived and executed in just a few days’ time with zero public announcements. The iconic set opens with two takes of Get Back, goes over a few of the bands established hits such as I’ve Got A Feeling and Don’t Let Me Down, and concludes with a yet another Get Back performance.

Disney will be releasing Jackson’s homage to the Beatles in the United States, as well as Canada, on the 4th of September.

Huawei Porsche Design Watch GT 2 Announced With Limited Availability

Chinese electronics manufacturer Huawei and German automaker Porsche are continuing their long-term collaboration, having just done so earlier today with the announcement of yet another member of the luxurious Porsche Design family of high-end consumer tech. The product in question is the Porsche Design Huawei Watch GT 2, a Wear OS smartwatch that tries to blend form over function, catering to consumers who are only interested in the very best, no-compromise solutions.

Made entirely out of titanium, the Porsche Design Huawei Watch GT 2 is a sleek device that should do a good job of blending with virtually any clothing style, from premium formal wear to completely casual looks. It uses two digital crowns that are the primary way of interfacing with its many functions.

Meaning a few rotating gestures are all that is required in order to activate pretty much any feature of the wearable. As expected, this thing will have an extremely limited availability once it releases early next month. There is still no word on the official pricing but previous generations from this smartwatch family, same as the Hublot family, were well into the quadruple-digit territory, and there is no reason to believe this one will be any different.

Prospective U.S. customers will have to import the Porsche Design Huawei Watch GT 2 from Europe, as per usual.

MSI Puts Future PS5 Owners’ Minds At Ease With Monitor Console Mode

The latest announcement out of MSI’s workshop isn’t centered on hardware, at least not in the way we’d expect. Instead, Micro-Star International today took the wraps off the MSI Monitor Console Mode, a software feature coming to a large number of its gaming displays that are already on the market and available to buy, as well as pretty much every future monitor that’s in the works.

The functionality in question has a pretty telling name but just for added clarity, its entire idea is to ease the concerns of future PlayStation 5 owners. If you did not hear about Sony’s curious technical decision just yet, note that the PS5 won’t offer native QHD output. Instead, QHD displays would be forced to upscale an FHD signal. This will not just degrade the quality of the final image compared to a native 4K output but also complicate the process of displaying the action on the screen to the point that it might introduce latency issues which could hurt one’s ability to compete in reflex-based multiplayer games such as shooters.

The MSI Monitor Console Mode addresses this hindrance by tricking the PS5 into sending it a 4K signal, then simply downscaling that image to a QHD one. This, in turn, will deliver better texture quality than native 1440p. As an added bonus, the HDR capabilities Sony baked into its next-generation gaming console will also work without a hitch in this mode. Of course, assuming the actual monitor in use supports HDR functionality.

As reported by Gameria.pl, Five of the latest curved monitors and three flat models from MSI’s Optix, Creator, and the newly introduced MPG Artymis series are planned to receive this feature in the coming days via an update, or will simply offer it out of the box.

Microsoft Edge Now Supports Mixed-Reality Browsing Via HoloLens 2

Microsoft has just started rolling out a new beta, or Insider build of its Internet Explorer successor Edge.

The biggest novelty in this revision of the Chromium-based browser has to do with something truly cutting-edge – support for mixed-reality experiences powered by the HoloLens 2, Microsoft’s latest pair of futuristic glasses that has been in the hands of tens of thousands of developers for almost a year to date as of this very moment.

As for the update at hand, note that we are talking about an installer package for Windows 10X that manages to combine the Microsoft Edge codebase with the HoloLens 2 hardware through the power of MXIS, a proprietary Windows app package format that combines the functionality of both .exe programs and compressed archives in order to sieve through to the absolute best aspects of both.

It is worth reminding that both HoloLens generations technically ran Microsoft Edge out of the box, but that was a legacy version of the browser with extremely limited functionality. With this realease, Internet interfacing akin to those scenes we remember from the 2002 thriller Minority Report are finally within reach.

If you happen to have the necessary tech, you can glimpse this potential future of browsing by joining the Microsoft Edge Beta program which is publicly available to all U.S. consumers.

NVIDIA Debuts New Ray-Tracing GPUs With RTX 30 Series

NVIDIA today announced the second generation of its ray-tracing graphics cards; three of them, to be more specific. The trio is launching as part of the GeForce RTX 30 series which is planned to reach the mass consumer market in the coming weeks. First as part of pre-built systems, and then individually.

Do not expect to be able to buy these things on their own that quickly, however, as new product generation shortages have been a thing in this industry even before Bitcoin mining took off. As a result, the most reliable way to get in on the next generation of graphical fidelity from NVIDIA will be to buy a gaming laptop, notebook, or even desktop. Or pre-order one just in time for the holiday season, that is.

As for the actual products that were announced today, the GeForce RTX 3090, 3080 and 3070 graphics cards promise up to twice greater performance compared to the RTX 20 series which launched in late 2018. In terms of energy efficiency, the company cites up to 1.9 greater improvements.

A swath of new software services powered by this new tech is also coming out as part of the generational leap, led by solutions for streamers and eSports professionals alike.

Montblanc Refreshes ‘Affordable’ Orbis Terrarum Line With 2020 Model

German luxury watchmaker Montblanc today announced the Orbis Terrarum (2020), an update to its eponymous lineup of affordable smartwatches. Affordable relative to the rest of its portfolio, that is.

As you are still looking at an investment amounting to nearly $7,000, depending on the exact model you purchase. The most affordable one is the stainless steel variant, as expected, whereas any involvement of gold drives up the price by a factor of at least three.

This is the first revision of the Orbis Terrarum range in a while now, with its goal being to bring the series in line with the Star Legacy brand that Montblanc launched in the meantime. As was the case with the 2014 originals, the main selling point of these watches is still their worldtimer watch functionality that allows you to easily keep track of time in any corner of the globe, so long as your geography knowledge includes the the list of the most iconic world capitals around the globe.

Montblanc isn’t advertising these new watches as anything close to affordable, mind you, as that simply wouldn’t be in line with its brand proposition, on the whole. Which doesn’t mean these models aren’t accessible by the company’s own standards, of course, which is ultimately all that matters. You can place your orders in the U.S. as of today, by the way.
